Printers: National Bank Note Company and American Bank Note Company, New York. Front printing in green and black. Description of the front: Portrait of Salmon P. Chase, 6th Chief Justice of the United States and 25th Secretary of the Treasury. Seal and numbering in red. The Act of July 11, 1862 is located in the middle of the upper border. The middle of the lower border contains the company issuing the banknote. Signature combinations: Chittenden (Register of the Treasury) and Spinner (Treasurer of the United States). Description of the back: rosette with the value “1 ONE” twice and in the center: “This Note is a Legal tender”. The back is printed in green called "Greenback (money)".
