French West Africa. Emergency Issue of 1940. Provisional government. 1 franc Type 1940 brown or bistre. Printer: unknown, printed locally. Dimensions: 100 x 66 mm. Watermark: No. Front and back: monochrome printing in brown or bistre. On the front: simple frame made up of small repeating triangles. In the center, a scene of return from fishing. At the top of the frame, the issuing institute "FRENCH WEST AFRICA" is printed on rows of lines. The note has no numbering, date and signatures. On the back: detailed graphic composition with the value and the acronym "AOF (FWA)" at the bottom of the bill. Texts in French and in Wolof language in the center in a box. Article 139 of the Penal Code is printed on four lines in a rectangle with rounded corners in the center. No specimen known for this Type. 2,000,000 copies were put into circulation and withdrawn on April 4, 1945.
