Description

Belgium. National Bank of Belgium. 1927-1947 Belgas Issues. Banknote issued between 20-09-1944 and 04-11-1944. Withdrawn from circulation on 03-11-1947. 100 francs - 20 belgas Type 1933 (1944) Front with texts in Dutch. (Ref. TBB: # B562 or Pick: # 114). Banknote designed by Émile Vloors and engraved by Guillaume Minguet for the front and by Maurice Poortman for the back. Dimensions: 179 x 108 mm. Printer: National Bank of Belgium. No security thread. Watermark: King Leopold I in profile, "100F" and "20B". Front and back: polychromy print with dominant orange. Description of the front: all texts are in Dutch. The frame consists of 4 texts: below, the wording of the issuing institute "NATIONALE BANK VAN BELGIE", the text of the law printed in the upper part and the value in letters on the sides "VINGT BELGAS / CENT FRANCS". The date, the banknote numbers and signatures are printed in black. On the left above the signature of the Treasurer, a medallion with the profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and on the right, above the signature of the Governor, a medallion with the portrait of King Albert II. In the center, an allegory of abundant Belgium symbolized by a woman lying among flowers and fruit near a still smoking censer. Only one type of signature with The Treasurer, Henri Sontag and The Governor, Georges Theunis. Description of the back: all texts are printed in French. Composition almost identical to the back, but the medallions this time contain a BNB monogram. Bottom center, a Belgian lion in a medallion above the label of the issuing institute "BANQUE NATIONALE DE BELGIQUE". In the center of the vignette, a woman and a man lying down symbolize the Meuse and the Scheldt. A child standing and holding a fish in his hands evokes the Albert Canal. The signatures on the front are shown on the back. Known series: 11,905 to 13,448. 13,000,000 issued notes.
