Description

New Hebrides. Bank of Indochina. Provisional Issues (1941-1963). A New Caledonia banknote Type (Pick: # 42) is overprinted in the center on the front of a red oval with a view of a Polynesian coastline, a Lorraine cross and the words "NOUVELLES HÉBRIDES - FRANCE LIBRE". Work by Sébastien Laurent and engraving by Rita. Dimensions: 206 x 118 mm. Watermark: native head in profile. The note is undated but was issued in September 1941. Full color front and back printing mainly brown, green and yellow. Texts in French. Description of the front: bottom and frame composed of branches and leaves of autumn oak. In the center of the upper edge, the label "BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE (BANK OF INDOCHINA)" is printed in a light brown cartridge. In the center of the drawing, an allegory of France represented by a Minerva wearing a crown of oak leaves and holding in her hands a branch of laurels and a small green statue of Athena standing on a globe. On each side, two identical white vertical medallions. The one on the left contains article 139 of the penal code printed in brown on seven lines and the watermark below. The medallion on the right contains the value “100 Fr.” printed in dark blue. Above, the overprint "NOUMÉA" in black and the signatures. At the bottom, the value in letters and the words "PAYABLE IN CASH TO THE HOLDER" are printed in blue in a frame. The numbering and the alphabet are printed in black and repeated at the top and bottom of the composition. Two combinations of signatures: a) The President and the Director - General Manager, b) The President and the General Manager. Back side description: two golden doors of honor (Pailou) decorated with dragon-headed snakes and stylized leaves frame a central medallion with a view of the ruins of the Bayon temple of Angkor-Vat in Cambodia with the four faces of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (the God who hears the cry of the world). In the center of the upper edge, the wording “BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE” printed in brown in a banner. The banknote amount "100 Francs" and the "NOUMÉA" overprint are printed in dark blue. Printer: Bank of France. 11,000 issued notes. The banknote is also found overprinted "CANCELLED" in black diagonally.
