French Polynesia. Tahiti. Bank of Indochina. 1920-1963 Issues. Work by Lucien Jonas and engraving by G. Beltrand. Dimensions: 208 x 119 mm. Watermark: native head in profile. The note is undated but was issued in 1940. Printer: Bank of France. Full color printing front and back, mainly brown, green, red and yellow. Texts in French. Description of the front: market scene. In the foreground on the right, a young woman with naked breasts is seated next to a stall of fruit and pottery. In the background, other vendors, and in the distance, a caravan of camels, the minaret and the village mosque. At the top border, the value "1000" and the label "BANK OF INDOCHINA" are printed in red in yellow cartridges. Below, the value in letters is printed in blue in the center. The ticket is overprinted “PAPEETE” in black on the left. The numbering and the alphabet are printed in black and repeated at the top and bottom of the composition. Three combinations of signatures printed in black with The President and The Vice-President and General Manager. Description of the back: upper border identical to the front with the value "1000" and the label "BANK OF INDOCHINA" printed in black in yellow cartridges. The drawing is made up of a Polynesian landscape. In the foreground on the left, a young native girl in a floral dress carries a woven basket. On the right a young man holding a spear seems to be looking at her. At the bottom, article 139 of the penal code is printed on four lines in a yellow cartridge. 2,250,000 issued notes. A work file comprising 17 documents from the artist's studio is known. A complete proof is known unsigned, perforated "CANCELLED" and numbered "O.00 000".
