Bank of Algeria. Allied Occupation. Banknote designed in 1945 but kept in reserve? 1,000 francs type 1945 nicknamed "Arnaud". Work by Cyprien Boulet, Georges Reguier for the engraving on the front and Auguste Chapon for the engraving on the back. Three issue dates: 23-3-1945, 23-5-1945 and 23-3-1949. Printer: Arnaud in Lyon on paper from the Marais stationery. Dimensions: 142 x 73 mm. Watermark: head of a European woman. Full color front and back printing. Front: floral frame inlaid with scallops. Bust of a European woman dressed in an orange drape on the left and a caravel on the right. The signatures, numbering, alphabet and date are printed in black. Values in numbers and letters are printed in orange. Only one type of signature is known with Sebald, The Chief Cashier and De Roux, The Secretary General. Back: bust of a European woman leaning on a base on which stands a statue of winged victory. In the background, a view of a harvested wheat field with, on the left, a couple of settlers busy at work. Bottom center in a blue frame, article 139 of the Penal Code. All known specimens are overprinted with red "SPECIMEN" oblique and dated 23-3-1945. They are all from the alphabet "Z.1080". Known copies: Z.1080-293, Z.1080-355, Z.1080-367 and, according to Maurice Kolsky, the notes numbered Z.1080-359 to Z.1080-444 (84 copies). The uniface specimen is known for the front and for the back oveprinted "SPECIMEN" in red and oblique. According to Mr. Virecoulon, 36 notes are currently listed. Concerning the alphabet V.1031, a thousand banknotes have undoubtedly been kept. These are obviously reserve notes that appeared in a find in Tunisia, a priori at least a bundle, and at the origin of almost all of the banknotes offered for sale. So be very careful about the real rarity of this bill! It is absolutely certain that some copies have circulated, since a copy of an alphabet hitherto never listed, and not UNC, was discovered very recently in Algeria. List of alphabets encountered: B.911, U.912, C.990 and V.1031 and all dated 23-3-1945.
