Description
Switzerland. Swiss National Bank (Schweizerische Nationalbank). Fifth issue (1954-1977). The banknote is dated 30-09-1954 but its entry into circulation begins from 14-06-1957. Permanently removed from circulation on 01-05-1980. Work of Pierre Gauchat. Printer: From The Street, London. Dimensions: 228 x 125 mm. No watermark. Security thread incorporated in the paper and visible by transparency. Front and back: Gradient purple to green and blue for the value. Front: Purple and green gradient background consisting of graphic shapes and wavy lines. The numbering, the alphabet, the place, the date of issue and the signatures are printed in black. The SNB texts and the value in letters are printed in dark purple and in three languages: French, German and Italian. The value "1000" is printed in three corners of the vignette and in large in the center in blue. The value is repeated five times smaller on the right margin of the note. On the right side, in a vertical rectangle, a portrait of a woman looking at death in front. Below, in another rectangle, the Swiss cross in white and the value in figures. Thirteen issue dates and twelve signature variants with The Cashier, The President of the Bank Council and The Director. Back: the value "1000" is repeated five times in smaller on the left margin of the note. In a vertical rectangle with a purple and green gradient background, the blue value in very large numbers and bent at 90 °, as well as the names of the SNB in three languages and dark purple. On the three-quarters of the vignette, a representation of the "Dance of the Death", figured by a Grim Reaper holding his scythe in one hand and a young child in the other. An old seated man has just gone to the other world. The hourglass on the floor near him symbolizes the time elapsed and the time of the Death. A winged angel accompanies him in death by closing his eyes. On the right, another Grim Reaper dances with a young woman holding a flower. Five types of specimens are known: an undated, unsigned specimen, numbered "00000" with the diagonal "SPECIMEN" overprint in red, and the oval stamp of the "De La Rue" printer. a second undated specimen, unsigned, numbered "1A 00000", with diagonal overprint "SPECIMEN" in red and the oval stamp of the printer "De La Rue". a third undated specimen, unsigned, numbered "#X 00000" with the diagonal "SPECIMEN" overprint in red (64 x 9.5 mm) and the oval stamp of the "De La Rue" printer. a fourth undated specimen, unsigned, numbered "#X 00000" with the diagonal "SPECIMEN" overprint in red (100 x 12.5 mm) and the oval stamp of the "De La Rue" printer.
