Description
France. Bank of France. Banknote issued from July 30, 1914 to October 1, 1917. Deprived of legal tender on December 31, 1933. 20 francs Type 1873 “Blue and Bistre” or more commonly known as “20 francs Black” (Ref. Fayette-Dessal: # F.9 or Pick: # 61). Work of Camille Chazal. The colors were engraved by heliogravure by Paul Dujardin and the wax of the watermark was engraved by Jules Chaplain. Dimensions: 151 x 99 mm. Printer: Bank of France. Material: Paper. Watermark: Woman's head symbolizing the Bank of France and a readable text “BANQUE DE FRANCE” on the back. Colors front and back: Polychrome printing with dominant blue and bistre. Description of the front: Two allegories representing Mercury seated on the left and Ceres seated on the right. In the background, a “semi of medals” of brown color. The values in numbers and letters, as well as the signatures, alphabet, date and numbering are printed in black. There are two combinations of signatures: a first combination with The Principal Cashier, Joseph Mignot and the Secretary General, Alfred Marsaud (alphabets 1 to 400). A second combination with The Principal Cashier, Victor d´Anfreville and Secretary General Joseph Giraud (alphabets 401 to 1162). Description of the back: Printing only in blue. There is a portrait of Mercury in a medallion on the right and a portrait of Ceres in a medallion on the left. In the center, the watermark in the texture of the paper. Article 139 of the Penal Code is printed at the bottom of the back in the center on six lines. The specimen of the banknote is very rare. This one is numbered "0.000 - 000" and dated "A. June 15, 1904.A. » without overprint and without "SPECIMEN" perforation. A copy in aUNC grade was sold for € 26,100 in 2015 at cgb.fr, Live auction e-Banknotes February 2015 (lot # 4010249). The 20 francs Type 1873 "Blue and Bistre" has 4 dates of creation: 1874, 1875, 1904 and 1905. This last date is the rarest with 11 copies referenced to date. The amount authorized for creation was 29.05 million banknotes, or 1,162 alphabets of 25,000 banknotes (Source: Bank of France website).
