Description

French Polynesia. Tahiti. French Settlements in Oceania. Colonial Treasury. 1880 Issue. Work by E. Mouchon (invt & sculpt). Variable dimensions (paper handcut): 120 x 76 mm. Watermark: No. Front and back: monochrome print in black on green paper. Printer: unknown. Description of the front: a simple frame with on the right and on the left, two columns supporting a jar and vegetation around. At the bottom of each side, two cherubs each support a cornucopia. In the center, Ceres, the goddess of Agriculture holds the hand of Mercury, the god of Commerce on a background of luxuriant vegetation and with the value "20 fr" between the two characters. No numbering. In the center at the top, the label of the issuing institute "French Settlements in Oceania" is printed in a serpentine. Below, the mention "COLONIAL TREASURY", the date of the Decree of March 9, 1880 and the value in words "TWENTY FRANCS". A single combination of signatures with the Delegate of the Director of the Interior and the Treasurer-Payer. Description of the back: the wording of the issuing institute "French Settlements in Oceania" is printed in a serpentine. Below, in a box in the center, the value "TWENTY FRANCS" and the words "The equivalent in cash is deposited in the Treasury". On each side in medallion, the profile portraits of Ceres on the left and Mercury on the right. We find in the center the two cornucopia and a sea anchor under the cartridge. The mention "COLONIAL TREASURY" is repeated at the bottom. 3,250 issued notes. Very rare. Put into circulation: 14-5-1890.
