Description

French West Africa. Bank of West Africa. 1943-1954 Issues. 5000 francs Type 1946. Work by Sébastien Laurent and engraving by G. Beltrand and J. Piel for the front and C. Chapon for the back. Printer: Bank of France, Paris. Dimensions: 211 x 115 mm. Watermark: profile portrait of a young African. Front and back: multicolored printing. On the front: background composed of a garland of flowers and fruits. In the center, two young African women, topless, frame a European woman symbolically representing metropolitan France. In the upper center, the issuing institute "BANQUE DE L'AFRIQUE OCCIDENTALE" is printed in light blue in a pale yellow cartridge. On the right, a white area reserved for the watermark is decorated with ears of wheat and exotic flowers. The value "5000" is printed in dark blue in the upper corners. The numbering, date and signatures are printed in black. The value in letters is printed in red-orange on the left. Two variants of signatures with the President and the Chief Executive Officer. On the back: a young African man plays Kora and a young woman by his side holds a palm in his hands. Behind them in the background, a cocoa plantation. The value in figures is repeated in orange in the upper corners. Above, article 139 of the Penal Code is mentioned on three lines in a pink box. Below, the issuing institute "BANQUE DE L'AFRIQUE OCCIDENTALE" is printed in blue in the thumbnail. The specimen on issued note is known dated “00-00-0000”, numbered “O.000-000”, perforated “SPECIMEN” diagonally with the signatures of G. Keller and E. Poilay and overprinted “SPECIMEN” with purple stamp front and back. Two complete single-sided proofs on the front and back are known on non-watermarked paper. A single-sided proof on the front is known, unnumbered, unsigned and without face value.
