Description
Algeria. French administration. Bank of Algeria. Creation date: 24-05-1945. This note, known as "STARFEL", is not issued and is kept in reserve. Work by William Fel and engraving by Camille Beltrand for the front and Marie-Madeleine Tison-Klein for the back. Dimensions: 129 x 70 mm. Watermark: profile of a Moorish woman in a medallion on the left. Front and back: polychrome print predominantly blue, green and yellow. Description of the front: background composed of oak leaves and small colorful flowers. The wording of the issuing institute "BANQUE DE L'ALGÉRIE" and the values are printed in dark blue. The numbering, signatures and date of issue are printed in black in the center. On the right, an allegory of the European woman wearing a crown of golden oak leaves. Only one combination of signatures is known with De Roux, The Secretary General and Sebald, The Cashier Principal. Description of the back: bottom composed of oak leaves and colorful flowers. The value “100” is printed in red in the upper corners. The wording of the issuing institute "BANQUE DE L'ALGÉRIE" and its translation into Arabic are printed in dark blue. On the left, a European woman, dressed in a long purple dress, sits on a stone stele. She reaches out, holding a miniature reproduction of the Statue of Liberty in her hand. Below it, article 139 of the Penal Code is printed in yellow in a blue-green cartridge. The specimen is known as overprinted "SPECIMEN" in red diagonally on the front and back. The bill is signed De Roux/Sebald, dated "00-0-0000" and numbered "0.00 - 000". This note was normally never issued, but a few rare copies probably circulated in the confusion of the transition to Algerian independence.
