Description

Algeria. French administration. Bank of Algeria. 1892-1926 Issues. Banknote identical to the 20 francs type 1873 "Blue with Algiers" (Pick # 15) but without the city "Algiers". Work by Guillaume Cabasson, engraving by Albert Bellenger for the front and Pannemaker Fils for the back. Dimensions: 153 x 98 mm. Watermark: BANK / 20 FRANCS / de L'ALGERIE / 20 and a lion. Printer: Bank of France (Clermont-Ferrand). Description of the front: Monochrome blue and black printing on white paper. Signatures, value in letters and numbering are printed in black. The date of issue and the value in Arabic are printed in blue. In the frame at the top, two entwined snakes frame article 139 of the Penal Code printed in a cartridge. On the left, a god Mercury seated and holding his caduceus in his hand, symbolizes Commerce and the Bank with an open bag of coins at his sides. On the right, the Colossus Hercules is seated on a lion's head and holds his club in one hand. Below, a moon crescent with the star of the Southern Cross. Two variants of signatures with the Secretary General and the Chief Cashier. The value "20" in figures is repeated twice in insets above the two figures. Description of the back: Monochrome printing in blue. Frame decorated with arabic motifs with the value "20" in figures repeated twice on the sides. Top center, a bust of a woman symbolizing France and bottom, article 139 of the Penal Code printed in a circular medallion. On the sides, two medallions hanging from columns contain a moon crossing with the star of the Southern Cross. On the left, a seated man decorates a vase with a brush. On the right, a woman in a tunic lifts a sheaf of ripe wheat and holds a billhook in her other hand. A fruit bowl is visible at his feet… like an allegory of abundance. Specimen of the note issued dated January 11, 1910, overprinted "SPECIMEN" in vertical red on the right on the front and back.
