Description

Algeria. Allied Occupation. Bank of Algeria. Banknote identical to 20 francs Type 1912 but reduced in size. Issuing period: 1943 to 1945. Creation date: 11-11-1942. Work by Duval and engraving by Romagnol. Dimensions: 125 x 92 mm. Watermark: "BANK OF ALGERIA" repeated continuously on the surface of the note. Front and back: Polychrome print predominantly purple and blue. Many varieties of tints printed for this note. Description of the front: background composed of arabesques in rehearsal. The signatures, numbering and date of issue are printed in black. The banknote does not have a control number!The wording of the issuing institute "BANQUE DE L'ALGÉRIE", the value "TWENTY FRANCS" and the date of issue are printed in purple in the center. On the right in a decorated medallion, the portrait of an Algerian woman in traditional costume. Two variants of signatures are known with the Inspector General and The Chief Cashier. At the bottom, the value "20" and article 139 of the Penal Code are printed in light blue. Back description: purple frame decorated with arabic patterns. In the center, two young boys, one kneeling and the other standing, frame a yellow medallion with a rhombus decorated and containing the value "20" printed in dark purple. In the background, a prickly pear and a doum palm. The specimen is known on an overprinted note "SPÉCIMEN" in red oblique on the front, signed Bérino / Sebald, dated "C.2-2-1944.C" and numbered "W.552 - 099". Another specimen identical to the previous one is known but dated "0-00-0000" and numbered "0.00 - 000". Banknotes dated between 22-10-1943 and 27-05-1944 are preceded by a letter A, B or C positioned before and after the date (A.00-00-0000.A).
