Algeria. Bank of Algeria. 1956-1958 Issues. Work by Robert Pougheon (1886-1955) and engraving by Camille Beltrand. Dimensions: 159 x 82 mm. Watermark: Profile of a Moorish woman in a square medallion on the left. Front and back: Polychrome printing predominantly blue-green and brown. Description of the front: The wording of the issuing institute “BANQUE DE L'ALGÉRIE” is printed in a blue-green square in the center. The value "5NF" is repeated twice in the upper corners. The numbering, signatures and date of issue are printed in black. On the right on the front, a head of Bacchus, Roman god of shepherds and flocks and a ram's head by his side. In the background, we can see a vine and a bunch of grapes on the left. In the same place, article 139 of the Penal Code is printed on three lines in an orange cartouche. Two combinations of signatures with The Secretary General and The Cashier General. Description of the back: A scene of work in the fields is represented from an old mosaic with two peasants and their agricultural tools. The value "500" is printed in Arabic and dark brown in the upper corners. At the bottom of the note, article 139 of the Penal Code is written in Arabic as well as the other wordings which were in French on the front. The specimen is known to be perforated "SPECIMEN" vertically. A second specimen is known overprinted "SPECIMEN" in black diagonally.
