Description
Algeria. French administration. Bank of Algeria. 1892-1926 Issues. Banknote identical to the 500 francs type 1873 "Blue with Algiers" (Pick # 19) but without the city "Algiers". Work by H. Cabasson and engraving by Pannemaker Fils for the front and engraving by Ch. Wullschleger for the back. Dimensions: 218 x 133 mm. Watermark: BANQUE / 500 FRANCS / de L'ALGERIE / 500 and a lion walking on the right. Front: Monochrome blue and black printing on white paper. Signatures, value in letters and numbering are printed in black. The issue date is printed in blue. Composition with an oval frame decorated in the upper part with two snakes and a winged anchor in the center. Article 139 of the Penal Code is printed in two vertical cartridges (unpublished). On the left, an allegory of Fortune standing with one hand resting on the wheel and stretching the other arm towards the future. On the right side, Mercury, god of Commerce standing and holding his caduceus in hand. Five variants of signatures are known with the Secretary General, the Director and the Chief Cashier. Below in the decorated frame, two children are leaning against a lamp. The child on the left symbolizes Science and the child on the right represents Study. The value is repeated obliquely in the corners of the drawing. Back: Monochrome printing in blue. In the upper part, the star of "South cross" in the center of the oval frame decorated with Arabic motifs. In the center of the drawing, a young boy standing holding a scythe, symbolizes Agriculture. On the left side, a medallion with the profile of Athena and on the right, a medallion with the profile of Ceres. At the bottom two winged dragons frame article 139 of the Penal Code printed in a blue medallion. The value in figures is repeated twice diagonally in the upper frame. The specimen is known overprinted "SPECIMEN" in red and vertically on the right on the front. The banknote is watermarked, signed Moyse / Moreau / Penalva, numbered "0.00 - 000" and dated May 33, 3091!
