Description

French Somaliland. Djibouti. Bank of Indochina. 1927-1941 Issues. Banknote identical to Pick: # 8 but with the number "100" in white in a red disc on the right. Work by Sébastien Laurent (Del.) And engraving by Rita (Sc.). No date (1931). Not issued. Dimensions: 206 x 118 mm. Watermark: Native's head in profile. Material: Paper. Printer: Bank of France. Polychrome front and back printing predominantly brown, green and yellow. Description of the front: Texts in French. Background and frame made of autumn oak branches and leaves. At the center of the upper edge, the wording "BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE" is printed in a light brown cartouche. In the center of the drawing, an allegory of France represented by a Minerva wearing a crown of oak leaves and holding in her hands a branch of laurels and a small green statue of Athena standing on a globe. On each side, two identical white vertical medallions. The one on the left contains article 139 of the penal code printed in brown over seven lines and the watermark below. The medallion on the right contains the value “100 Fr.” printed in blue. Above, the “DJIBOUTI” overprint and the signatures in black with "Le Président" et "Le Directeur Général Adjoint": Paul Baudouin / Jean Laurent. At the bottom, the value in letters and the words "PAYABLE IN CASH TO THE PORTER" are printed in blue in a pediment. The numbering and alphabet are printed in black and repeated at the top and bottom of the composition. Description of the back: Two gilded honor doors (Pailou) decorated with dragon-headed snakes and stylized leaves frame a central medallion featuring a view of the ruins of the Bayon temple of Angkor-Wat in Cambodia with the four faces of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (the God who hears the cry of the world). In the center of the upper edge, the wording "BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE" printed in brown in a band. The number "100" is in white in a red disc and the overprint "Djibouti" is in red. This note is known only in specimen without cancellation perforations. Numbering 0.00 - 000. No ink cashier number.
