Description

French Somali Coast. Djibouti. Bank of Indo-China. 1943 Issues. Work by Gustave Fraipont and engraving by Eugène Gaspérini for the front and by Rita for the back. Dimensions: 219 x 151 mm. Watermark: Polynesian woman's head with flowers in her hair. Material: Paper. Printer: Bank of France. Polychrome front and back printing predominantly green, red and yellow. Description of the front: Overprint "Côte Française des Somalis - B.I.C - Djibouti" on Pick : # 8b (March 8, 1938). Texts in French. Frame composed of repeating floral shapes. At the center of the upper edge, the wording "BANQUE DE L'INDO-CHINE" is printed in dark green in a light green cartouche. On the left, a standing woman wearing a wreath of woven leaves holds an olive branch in her left hand. His other hand is placed on a coat of arms in which we can guess a Gallic rooster, a distant symbol of metropolitan France. Above, a scene of merchant ships at anchor in a Polynesian port undoubtedly Noumea. Below, on a light green security background, the “DJIBOUTI” overprint and the date of issue in black, then the value in letters and the words “PAYABLE IN CASH AT SIGHT TO THE HOLDER” are printed in dark brown. The numbering and the alphabet are printed in black in small cartridges in the frame at the top and bottom. A combination of signatures with "Le Président (The President)", Marcel Borduge and "Le Directeur Général (The Chief Officer)", Paul Baudouin. On the left, a medallion containing the watermark is decorated with bunches of fruit and placed on a cart. In the foreground, a scythe and a rake are placed on cut hay. At the bottom of the note, the value in figures is printed in a red cartouche and surrounded by pineapple fruit. Description of the back: Frame composed of fruits and flowers in repetition on the outline. In the center, two coastal landscapes with merchant ships and sailboats at anchor are separated by a light blue area with the value in figures and light blue rays diffusing from the center outwards. At the top, the monogram "BIC" of the "BANQUE DE L'INDO-CHINE". On the right, a young Polynesian topless is dressed in a long crimson sarong. On the left, the watermark medallion is overgrown with tropical vegetation. Confirmed Blocks: X.3, Y.3 and Z.3.
