The five small notes of the "Bundeskassenschein" (Federal Treasury) have been designed and printed to deal with a major military attack from Eastern Europe! In the 1960s, the Cold War was still very present in people's minds. For the Bundesbank, the objective was to make the Deutsche Mark invalid in the event of a successful invasion. The Bundeskassenschein banknotes were not intended to be exchanged with other foreign currencies, but intended only for the German population to meet their basic daily needs.
