French State Mines of Saarland 1920  (1920)

In 1920, France received the authorization to administer the autonomous territory of the Saar Basin (in German, Saarbeckengebiet), in order to control and exploit the coal mines in financial compensation for war damage. A series of seven denominations is prepared but only two notes are issued: a 50 cent note (Pick: P.SAAR 01) and a 1 franc note (Pick: P.SAAR 02). The other five denominations of 5, 10, 50, 100 and 1000 francs are finally not issued and remain in the test state. These proof notes are very rare and sought mainly by French and German collectors. At least three series known in private collections now!
