Bank of Indochina (1905-1914)  (1905-1914)

Towards the end of the 19th century, the local government of Tahiti was faced with serious monetary problems. On the one hand, the flood of foreign currencies, like the Chilean piastre which will remain very present in the Polynesian islands until 1911, and on the other hand, the flight of the French currency linked to the imbalance between imports and exports . After considering creating a local currency specific to Tahiti, the authorities are considering the possibility of setting up a new local bank, also intended to reduce the influence of the Caisse Agricole de Papeete in Tahiti. The Indo-China bank, which is already established in other French territories for identical reasons, would be the ideal solution. After a study mission carried out in 1903, a Decree of May 20, 1904 authorized the creation of a branch of the Bank of Indo-China in Tahiti. The first notes of 5 francs, 20 francs and 100 francs from the main Parisian agency were sent during the year 1905 ...
