On November 5, 2019, during the "Internet Auction Banknotes November 2019" sale, cgb.fr sold a 20 francs note Type 1943 from French Equatorial Africa (Ref. Pick: # 17c or Kolsky: # K527) at the price of € 50 (lot # 4340184). The price is certainly not extraordinary but the note is the very first copy encountered for the Type without serial letter with a numbering in black! This one is numbered “0,954,989”, classified in “G” grade and its sale estimate was € 150!

4] 20 francs 1943 Type 4 (Ref. TBB: #B403d, Pick: # 17d, Kolsky: # K528a or Kolsky: # K528b)

English numbering with a serial letter A printed in green and a black number with 6 or 7 digits. The note includes the green signatures of James Leclerc and André Postel-Vinay (# K528a) or James Leclerc and André Duval (# K528b). The bill is not dated, but was issued between October 15 and December 31, 1946 for Brazzaville and Cameroon (Douala):

  • A 000,001 to 2,520,000 (Douala),
  • A 2,520,001 to 3,960,000 (Brazzaville),
  • A 3,960,001 to 5,000,000 (Douala),
  • A 5,000.001 to 5.034,000 (Brazzaville),
  • A 5,034,001 to 5,100,000 (Douala),
  • A 5,100,001 to 5,430,000 (Brazzaville).

On page 206 of the book “African banknotes in the franc zone”, Roger Leclerc and Maurice Kolsky indicate that the banknotes issued for Douala in Cameroon include the signatures of James Leclerc and André Duval (# K528b). It's probably a mistake because we did not find any trace of it after an active search in our archives and in the archives of many auction houses (cgb, Heritage Auctions, Stack's Bowers, etc.). This note could possibly correspond to the range of numbers "A 5,034,001 to A 5,100,000" of which no copy has so far been found! We invite collectors with this banknote to send us a photo!

Note: André Postel-Vinay and André Duval are one and the same person ... André Duval was the name of André Postel-Vinay's resistant!
